They are Gram‐negative, nonmotile cells. Do not require β‐NAD or haemin for growth. Oxidase positive. Negative reactions for catalase, urease, indole, α‐glucosidase. Positive for methyl red and negative for Voges Proskauer reaction. Acid is produced from d‐galactose, d‐mannitol, d‐mannose, sucrose, d‐trehalose, and d‐xylose. It currently comprises the species Basfia succiniciproducens (synonym “Mannheimia succiniciproducens”, not validly published) that is part of the microbiota of the bovine rumen and has industrial potential for the bio‐production of succinic acid. DNA G + C content (mol%): 42.3–42.5. Type species: Basfia succiniciproducens Kuhnert, Scholten, Haefner, Mayor and Frey 2010, 48VPen500 - Science::570 - Life sciences; biology600 - Technology::630 - Agriculture600 - Technology::660 - Chemical engineeringBasfiabook_section10.48350/15442310.1002/9781118960608.gbm01767
