To render it realistic it is important to correctly present certain key factors that determine the level of immersion into the simulation (1). Our hypothesis is that smell, though often neglected, is one of these key factors. The addition of smell may improve simulation authenticity, biographical memory formation and coping mechanisms for exposure to stenches (2). On the other hand, adding smell to simulations comes at a price: it requires time, money and personnel to develop and provide the additional factor. We would like to discuss with participants and explore together if adding smells to simulation is worth the effort. 05 Min Welcome, Introduction Plenary 15 Min Experiencing scents live Circuit in groups 15 Min Collection of Experiences Discussion in groups 10 Min Summary of Experiences Plenary discussion 20 Min Hints from Literature Presentation to plenary 15 Min Advantages and Drawbacks of Smell, Application in Practice Plenary discussion 10 Min Summary and Goodbye Plenary At the end of the workshop participants should be able to - specify effects of smell added to simulation - name advantages and disadvantages of smell in simulation - decide in which cases adding smell to simulation is of relevant added value This workshop is suitable for people interested in professional design of simulation at all levels of experience.
