Abstract
This thesis integrates three published papers into a cohesive examination of narrative identity during major life transitions. Beginning with the paradox of identity and change, I draw on Dialogical Self Theory and Career Construction Theory to conceptualize identity as agentic, emergent, and dynamic. Using a Modular Narrative framework, I argue that individuals must actively innovate and maintain narrative continuity to preserve a coherent sense of self through transitions. Focusing on retirement from elite sport, I explore what qualities of retiring athletes' narratives enable self-innovation and continuity. The thesis concludes with theoretical implications and personal reflections on the research process.
