Description
Iranian identity and authenticity discourse constitutes a crucial phenomenon of Iranian intellectual counter culture during the Pahlavī era (1925-1979).
The paper discusses this discourse in terms of a question of meaning or meaningfulness by analyzing the essay 'West infection [Ġarbzadegī]' by the Iranian thinker and writer Ǧalāl Āl-e Aḥmad (1923-1969) which, in the early 1960, set the tone and, to a considerable extent, the agenda of this debate to this very day. In the essay, the author deals with modern technological civilization as a kind of dehumanizing disease affecting both Iran and 'the West' itself.
