Abstract
This paper explores the persistence of traditional motifs in furnishing silks of the 18th century, a time when even textiles covering furnitures experienced an evolution in motifs following various trends. Yet, throughout the 18th century, some fabrics such as damasks and velvets showcased patterns inherited from the previous century. This conservatism in patterns stemmed from the place of use of these fabrics, as well as the place of manufacturing. The geography of the European silk manufactures shows indeed a specialism in the type of patterns, between Lyon, Tours and the Italian silk weaving centres.
