Gewaltkultur im öffentlichen Raum des Amtsbezirks Bern 1861-1873

Das Ziel des historischen Beitrages ist es, mit kulturwissenschaftlichen Methoden die Qualität der Gewaltkultur, wie sie in der zweiten Hälfte des 19. Jahrhundert in und um Bern mehrheitlich von jungen Männern praktiziert wurde, zu rekonstruieren. Gewalt in der Öffentlichkeit kannte bestimmte Akteure, Orte, Zeiten und kulturelle Handlungsmuster. Kämpfe geschahen aus Selbstzweck und ohne Absicht den Kontrahenten folgenschwer zu verletzen. Diese spezifische Form der Gewalt kann soziologisch am ehesten als Spiel verstanden werden.

Le but de cette contribution est de faire une enquête historique sur la culture de violence qui était pratiquée surtout par les jeunes hommes aux alentours et dans la ville de Berne pendant la deuxième moitié du 19e siècle. Cette enquête sera menée en recourant aux méthodes de l’analyse culturelle. La violence publique était marquée par certains acteurs, lieux, temps et comportements typiques. Les combats étaient une fin en soi, sans le dessein de gravement blesser l’adversaire. Vue d’une perspective sociologique, ce genre de violence peut se comprendre comme une sorte de jeu.

The aim of this article is to qualitatively examine and reconstruct the culture of violence which was practised in and around Bern by predominantly young men in the second half of the 19th century. This will be undertaken by employing a method of cultural analysis. The occurrence of violence in public spaces was determined by certain actors, places, times and cultural patterns of action. In these instances, fighting was an end in itself, and was carried out without the aim of injuring the opponent. From a sociological perspective, this specific form of violence can be understood to be a kind of game.
