Description
The relationship between Jürgen Habermas’s position on bioethics and bioconservativism is still insufficiently clear. Although Habermas himself notes that he can, in an unspecified sense, be considered conservative with regard to bioethics, this self-designation does not itself constitute proof. The fact that Habermas’s arguments have been taken up in the bioconservative debate has led some to acknowledge Habermas’s engagement with bioconservatism. However, the clarification of the condition of individual freedom that Habermas proposes in his bioethics mediates the selfhood of the person through the materiality of a biological beginning. Thus, as will be shown, he repeatedly departs from the bioconservative discourse.
