Description
“Press the power button.” Camera instruction manuals of the 20th and 21st centuries from a gender and postcolonial perspective.
The focus of this ongoing PhD research work is the camera instruction manual, which accompanies each camera in order for the industry to transmit its own information to the user. This is all communicated in the form of text and pictures within their technical, economic, legal, social and ethical capacity. It is designed for smooth interaction between the camera and the user with the aim of incorporating these methods into the users’ habits and to shape their image practice. I will critically assess the social impact of the camera instructions in the manual from a gender and postcolonial perspective, in order to understand how the gaze of the camera sold by the imaging industry is translated and transmitted and how the power relations are articulated through the practice and form of visuality.
Methods: Social semiotics and multimodality, Multimodal Discourse Analysis (MDA).
An interdisciplinary approach by Theo van Leeuwen on the basis of semiotics and social sciences.
