Neo-Pagan Censorship and Editing in Medieval Sparta, Or: How Gemistos Pletho Rewrote his Herodotus
Abstract
This paper studies how the late Byzantine philosopher Gemistos Pletho edited his manuscript of Herodotus' Histories (Florence, BML Plut. Gr. 70.6). It explores the chronology and motivation behind several puzzling interventions – including deletion and rewriting – and their relationship to Pletho's controversial neopagan thought experiment, as attested in what survives of his burned "Book of Laws".
