Nonthyroidal illness in dogs: to treat or not
Hypothyroïdie fonctionnelle chez le chien : traiter ou non ?
Abstract
The term functional hypothyroidism corresponds to a decrease in thyroid activity of the euthyroid animal with a systemic disease, also known as « euthyroid sick syndrome ». Virtually any systemic disease may be the cause of this syndrome, which is characterized by a reduction in total T3, total T4, and free T4 in the absence of increased TSH. This profile is also found in almost a third of dogs with primary hypothyroidism. It is therefore extremely important to be able to differentiate the two conditions. Functional hypothyroidism results from an adaptive physiological response mechanism, which reduces the metabolism of thyrocytes and helps to limit the catabolic state of the body. Specific treatment is not recommended.
