Sprache prägt unser Denken und Handeln. Solange der Diskurs über den öffentlichen Raum die Interessen des motorisierten Verkehrs stützt, kommt die Verkehrswende nur schwer voran. Sie kann aber Schwung gewinnen, wenn wir Räume aus der Sicht des aktiven Verkehrs erschließen, alte Wörter neu denken und neue in Gebrauch nehmen.
The article examines the impact of the use of key terms related to public space on the transition towards sustainable mobility in urban areas. Evidence from discourse linguistics indicates that framings such as parking space (Parkplatz), playground (Spielplatz), and roadway (Fahrbahn) have historically paved the way for motonormativity. A narrow understanding of a street as a motor transit space consolidates the normalcy of the car. Over the last decade a new interest in the allocation of public space has emerged. In an increasingly limited urban space, new words focusing on space allocation (such as spatial justice [Flächengerechtigkeit]) open the way for social and ecological transformation. Zones (such a pedestrian zones and 30 km/h zones) create islands of deceleration that both compensate for and stabilize motorized transport. The contribution concludes with linguistic suggestions promising to advance a mobility transition.
