Ausstellungsgeschichte als Ansichtssache. Das Fotoarchiv der Kunsthalle Basel

Abstract

Das Fotoarchiv der Kunsthalle Basel dokumentiert die Ausstellungstätigkeit seit rund 100 Jahren. Während die 1872 gegründete Institution darauf ausgerichtet ist, zeitgenössische Kunst zu zeigen, schärft das überwiegend durch Drittmittel finanzierte Projekt ein Bewusstsein für historisch wertvolle Quellen. Die Konservierung, Restaurierung, Digitalisierung und Veröffentlichung des Fotoarchivs erfolgt in Kooperation mit dem Digital Humanities Lab der Universität Basel. Ein weiteres dort angesiedeltes Drittmittelprojekt, „Archives on the move“, beschäftigt sich damit, wie auf einer Plattform digitale Bestände von kulturellen Sammlungen durchsucht, visualisiert und vermittelt werden können. Mit einer Ausstellung im Herbst 2017 gelangte das Fotoarchiv erstmals ins Bewusstsein einer breiteren Öffentlichkeit.

Kunsthalle Basel’s photographic archive has been documenting its exhibition activities for around 100 years. And although this institution, which was established in 1872, focuses on showing contemporary art, this project, which is largely financed by third-party sponsorship, raises the public’s awareness of historically valuable source material. The preservation, restoration, digitization and publication of the photographic archive take place in cooperation with the University of Basel’s Digital Humanities Lab. Another project that enjoys third-party funding, “Archives on the move”, explores how the digital content of cultural collections can be searched, visualized and communicated on one platform. An exhibition in fall 2017 first attracted the attention of a wider audience to the photographic archive.
