Ecocide and ethnocide in Brazilian Amazonian Literature
Abstract
The Amazon contains the greatest biodiversity on earth. This biodiversity is found not only in indigenous plants and species, but also among indigenous peoples and cultures. Ecological and human biodiversity, as is well known, is increasingly endangered, primarly through an assault by individuals, groups, and nations rather than merely as a result of natural forces.
The presentation examined and tried to reflect upon two issues :
1. How is the Amazon represented in Brazilian literature? Are the issues of ecocide and ethnocide taken into consideration? If yes, since when and how?
2. Why worry about literature in the face of such urgent real-life questions? Could literature have the power to contribute to the transformation of the ecological imagination of its readers, or even incite them to concrete environmental action?
