En este artículo se aborda el trabajo fotográfico de Ralph Sprenkels quien, entre 1992 y 1995 y mientras trabajaba en Chalatenango, fotografió la dinámica y el entorno de esta región que entraba a una nueva fase tras doce años de conflicto en El Salvador. Sprenkels murió repentinamente en 2019, dejando tras sí un impresionante trabajo fotográfico y académico. Con intención de honrar y seguir contribuyendo a ese legado, se estudia una selección representativa de su archivo digital del período mencionado. En primer lugar, las autoras recorren el vínculo entre el fotógrafo, las fotografías y su propia experiencia de vida. En estos relatos aparece la intrincada, intensa e interesante relación entre lo personal, lo político, lo afectivo y lo intelectual que marca la historia de la región centroamericana. Posteriormente, a partir de una selección de fotografías de Sprenkels se reflexiona sobre las memorias que evocan, los significados que encierran y la importancia que ofrecen para entender El Salvador durante la posguerra.
This article addresses the photographic work of Ralph Sprenkels who, between 1992 and 1995 and while working in Chalatenango, photographed the region and its people as it entered a new phase after twelve years of armed conflict in El Salvador. Sprenkels died suddenly in 2019, leaving behind his impressive artistic and academic work. With the intention of honoring this legacy and contributing to it, a representative selection of his digital archive from the above-mentioned period is analyzed. First, the authors explore the link between the photographer, the photographs and their own lived experiences. These stories reveal the intricate, intense and compelling relationship between the personal, the political, the affective and the intellectual that marks the history of the Central American region. Subsequently, based on a selection of Sprenkels’ photographs, we reflect on the memories they evoke, the meanings they hold, and the importance they offer for understanding El Salvador during the postwar period.
