Crossroads of social choreographies and decolonial practices in "Archivo Technocumbia"
Abstract
This paper examines the work of Bolivian choreographer Sharon Mercado Nogales, whose artistic research practice draws on technocumbia, a social dance that emerged in the 1990s through a TV competition and blends techno, Euro-Disco, and Andean cumbia. Approaching her work as both social choreography and decolonial practice, the paper asks: How does the artist create and use crossroads of styles, memory and territories, and production structures to both identify with and critically question them? This question will be discussed in resonance with the concept of ch’ixi (as elaborated by Silvia Rivera Cusicanqui), which describes the coexistence of antagonistic elements within a single entity and links to decoloniality as a practice.
