Description
Abstract. Somatoform pain disorders form a separate category of pain disorders, in which pain occurs as a consequence of an alteration of perception and processing in the central nervous system. Distinguished by certain characteristic proprieties, somatoform pain is not a diagnosis by exclusion. Somatoform pain disorders can frequently be found in combination with peripheral-nociceptive pain. When treating a patient with chronic pain it is therefore necessary to specifically explore and identify clinical signs of somatoform pain components.
