Abstract
Yahya Elsaghe is a Germanist and Professor of Modern German Literature at the University of Bern. The aim of this interview is to explore the ideas of gender roles and illness in the works of Thomas Mann. Femininity, masculinity and gender identity in Mann have only become a topic of discussion in recent decades, but they are fundamental concepts to understand Mann as an individual author and as a representative of his generation. The relationship between gender and illness is particularly highlighted in his last work, the novella The Black Swan, in which gender roles are questioned, also in relation to the biblical sphere.
