Sirkeli Höyük: Kompleks Kent Yapısının Keşfi ve Araştırılma Süreci
Abstract
In summary, remote sensing methods, geophysical surveys and surface surveys together yield an interesting picture of the urban structure of Sirkeli Höyük in the Bronze and Iron Ages. Topographic features are emphasized by means of remote sensing methods, and it is possible to detect large settlement areas and depths
with minimum effort under appropriate conditions by means of geophysical measurements. Surveys provide the first clues to dating the finds. Today, traditional excavation methods are insufficient to investigate large settlements. Nevertheless, there are many questions that can only be answered by archaeological excavations. In particular, questions about the development of a particular residential area and the functions of certain structures can only be answered by analyzing the architectural remains uncovered and their relationship to other finds. Therefore, when these methods are used as an integral part of archaeological excavations, it gives more effective results than archaeologists can only be achieved by traditional methods. In addition to the chronology, cultural transformation and interaction results of excavations, new data on the
size, structure and internal dynamics of the Bronze and Iron Age settlements have been provided thanks to these studies applied in the example of Sirkeli Höyük in recent years. In addition to the size of the structure, another striking element is the complex of a complex city structure consisting of the sitadel, the ‚second sitadel’, the Lower and Upper City, out-of-the-wall mills, and the front city opposite the Ceyhan River. Sirkeli Höyük is certainly an example of the construction in other cities in the region rather than being the only settlement with these characteristics on the borders of Cilicia. However, modern construction makes it difficult to investigate other great ancient settlements of Cilicia and to answer questions about urbanity. Nevertheless, excavations in settlements such as Kinet Höyük and Tatarlı Höyük can answer important questions regarding the urbanization of Cilicia.
