Uncovering Hidden Connections: Exploring History with Social Network Analysis
Abstract
This presentation explores how Social Network Analysis (SNA) can uncover exclusionary practices in Internet governance by analyzing co-authorship in the RFC series of the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF). By constructing a co-authorship network from RFC documents spanning 1968-2000, the study reveals patterns of inclusion and exclusion within governance bodies, identifies influential actors, and highlights marginalized contributors. This research underscores the need for more inclusive governance by examining historical trends in participation.
