Abstract
This paper gives a brief review of the parameters which can be extracted from ice cores in order to reconstruct past climatic and environmental conditions. Particular attention is given to stable isotopes of oxygen and hydrogen and concentrations of methane, carbon dioxide, dust, and radioisotopes. Using ages determined by counting annual layers or by calculations from ice flow models it has been possible to derive climatic information from ice cores at environmentally critical times: during the last glaciation; the end of the last glaciation, and during the last 200 years.
