Abstract
The global budget of N2O still shows large uncertainty between the known rate of destruction in the stratosphere and the estimated rates of natural and anthropogenic production in soils and ocean. Two-isotope characterization approach was applied to provide additional constraints on global budgets of N2O. Nitrogen and oxygen isotopic characteristics of N2O from known major sources and reservoirs show that N2O in the atmosphere is controlled by the input from soils, exchanges of N2O between troposphere and stratosphere, and between troposphere and ocean. A simple model is constructed to evaluate the status of current isotopic data. Initial results show that isotopic characteristics of N2O can provide important constraints on closing global budget of N2O. The model was further extended to preindustrial era to estimate the isotopic composition of N2O during that time. The trend of isotopic signal in tropospheric N2O could be no less than 0.6 per mil per year since pre-industrial time, which deserves close attention for future researches.
