The case of Ingushetia: Memory of the Stalinist De-portation and Political Mobilisation (1986-1994)
Abstract
During the transformative years of Perestroika, old, centralised frameworks of meaning broke apart and new interpretations and political claims were formulated by local groups, including those in the North Caucasus. The (re)activation of the memory of the wrongdo-ings suffered during Soviet rule – above all the deportations of 1943-44 – played a key role in these processes. The present article examines the case of Ingushetia, analysing how po-litical claims are formulated on the basis of traumatic memories and how clashing mne-monic narratives can contribute to violent escalations – if they are not dealt with properly. The present narrative analysis is based on a combination of local newspapers and scholarly works, which serve as the primary sources.
