Capacity building through knowledge exchange between Cape Grim and Jungfraujoch research stations

Cape Grim and Jungfraujoch research stations are two of the longest operating and best-known remote research stations in the world. Measurements made at remote stations provide unique reference data representing background or baseline conditions, which are used to address awide variety of research questions. Operations at these sites face many of the same challenges, relating to aspects such as research, logistics, safety, and data management. This scientific research exchange aims to deepen collaboration, capacity building and knowledge exchange between the leadership teams at Cape Grim and Jungfraujoch through a structured and thorough comparison of operations and scientific research across a number of topic themes.The exchange will take place in northern Tasmania, both at Cape Grim station and at the operational offices of the station team, in February – March 2026.
During the research stay, we will conduct detailed investigation of numerous thematic areas.Following the research stay, we will use the results to develop and publish a detailed comparison and a set of best practice guidelines for remote station operation. We will work towards establishment of a network of remote stations to enhance cooperation, interoperability, data sharing and access, and other thematic overlaps, between existing stations. Currently, networks only exist to support specific monitoring programs and not for overall station operations. We will furthermore extend this network towards colleagues in developing and data-poor regions, to facilitate the activities and development of stations in these regions.
The close exchange of knowledge and ideas in this research exchange will bring added value tothe wider scientific community through the improvement and harmonisation of remote station operation. This project will have a strong impact on scientific research into key issues and research questions requiring remote station data, such as climate change, air pollution,atmospheric transport, and oceanic and terrestrial biogeochemistry.
