Wine, victuals and volcanoes – potential impacts of the 1640/1641 double volcanic eruption on climate and society in early modern Switzerland (Historical data)
Project description
This dataset contains the underlying historical data for the paper "Wine, victuals and volcanoes – potential impacts of the 1640/1641 double volcanic eruption on climate and society in early modern Switzerland" (in preparation for Climate of the Past). It comprises annual records of agricultural production, prices, income, expenditure and demographic information from three municipal hospitals on the Swiss Plateau – the Burghers' Hospital (Hôpital des Bourgeois) in Fribourg, the Lower Hospital (Unteres Spital) in Bern and the Hospital of the Holy Spirit (Heiliggeistspital) in St. Gallen – for the period 1635–1647. The data cover four sectors of agricultural production (viticulture, husbandry, caseiculture, crop cultivation) as well as general hospital operations. Both the original values in historical units and the processed (normalized and homogenized) values in SI units are provided. A supplementary file documents the reconstruction of the vineyard property of the Hospital of the Holy Spirit in St. Gallen.
