Abstract Documentary climate data describe evidence of past climate arising from predominantly written historical documents such as (weather) diaries, chronicles, newspapers, or logbooks. Over the past decades, historians and climatologists have generated numerous document-based time series of local and regional climate. However, a global dataset of documentary climate time series has never been compiled, and consequently documentary data are rarely used in large-scale climate reconstructions. Here, we present the first global multi-variable collection of documentary climate records. The dataset DOCU-CLIM currently comprises 621 time series (both published and hitherto unpublished) providing information on historical variations in temperature, precipitation, and wind regime. The series are evaluated by formulating proxy forward models (i.e., predicting the documentary observations from monthly instrumental climate fields) in an overlapping period. Results show strong correlations particularly for the temperature sensitive series. Correlations are somewhat lower for precipitation sensitive series, possibly due instrumental or documentary data of lesser quality, or issues of disparate scales of data representation. Overall, we ascribe considerable potential to documentary records as climate data, especially in regions and seasons not well represented by early instrumental data and palaeoclimate proxies. Methods for processing the data: We compiled as much as possible of the documentary data listed in Burgdorf (2022) overlapping the period 1400-1880 CE, with a minimum record length of 30 years of which 20 must be before 1880. Describe any quality-assurance procedures performed on the data: We formulated forward models based on instrumental global monthly climate fields (BEST and HadCRUT5 for temperature, GPCC for precipitation) to predict the documentary variable. The number of overlapping years between proxy and climate series had to be superior to 20 years (for all African wetness/dryness indices, as an exception, we accepted 10 overlapping years). A backward selection approach was used to predict a documentary variable from the climate values of the preceding months. The files indicate the reference period, data set, model structure, correlation statistics, p-value, and residual variance of the calibrated forward models. 7.
